It’s World Cup time again, and this time England will definitely not go out in the Quarter Finals… 2nd round then… Anyway, yesterday I came across this rather apt Commodore 64 treasure – “Italy 1990 – the World Cup Starts Here” from US Gold.
Included in the box is an entry form for a “Spot the Ball” competition, so in the spirit of sporting tradition I offer a splondiferous mystery
prize to the person who comes the closest to my guess. Answers in Battleship-style number format please. Mark your cross with care
Anna, I had this game and never entered the ‘Spot the Ball’ competition. But I never noticed just how ludicrous it was! They’re taking the piss! It is described as an ‘imaginary goalmouth scene’, but is actually six or seven individual pictures pasted together. They’re all based on real photographs (most of them I can recall seeing), and some of them aren’t even NEAR the goalmouth; they’re just two players running for the ball. I think the goalkeeper diving to the right of the picture at the back is in fact Peter Shilton.
I can’t possibly imagine how this could have ever been judged fairly because all the players are from different pictures and looking in different directions at their own respective footballs. And I’m of the honest opinion that the people at US Gold were seriously laughing (and probably shitfaced) when they planned the entire competition.
However… I love them even more for that. Nothing like taking the total piss out of the paying consumers, lol. And for the record, I would like to enter my guess as being 5 squares across and 6 squares down. There are 12 players in the picture, and 3 of them ALMOST look like they’re looking there.
Ha! On the 18th of June 1990 I was still only 14!
Toodles ! x
